Hi everyone,

I'm delighted to have found this forum, and hope to meet more like-minded martial artists by taking part. This post is both an introduction, and a plea for recommendations for local training in Manila.

I'm a lifetime martial artist recently converted to FMA by my JKD instructor (Andre Martin, of Minnesota Kali fame) just prior to leaving England. I'll be living between Manila, England and the US for the next several years, and after just a couple of weeks in the Philippines am still finding my feet. With all the traveling, I've struggled to keep my training up recently, and am looking for recommendations for a good FMA class near Global City in Manila to train at for 6 months of the year. If anyone here is a member or instructor at a club I could get to on public transport, please leave contact details so I can get in touch.

Also, I might be interested in private tuition to supplement training at a regular class, so details for that will also be much appreciated. I don't speak Tagalog, though I am willing to learn if that makes a difference :)

I'm *very* new to weapons in general and FMA in particular with only a few months of training gained so far in each. My fiance is also enthusiastic about FMA, although she is completely new to martial arts and hasn't trained in anything else previously, so a class that could accomodate us both would be ideal. My previous styles include JKD, Wing Chun, Tae Kwon-Do, Zhuan Shu Kwan Kung Fu and Shotokan Karate -- I have senior grades in most of them (except JKD and Wing Chun which I am too new at to have tested), and used to compete at a national level in TKD until a couple of years ago, where I retired on a high note after winning silver at the English Open in 2003.

Cheers,
Gary

There's a lot in Manila..

- Modern Arnis - there are lots of different groups with known Masters like Rodel Dagooc, Ernesto Presas, ...
- Balintawak with Bobby Tabimina
- LSAI with several groups, I'd say try John Escudero
- Bahad Zubu with Mang Yuli
- Lapunti Arnis de Abanico
- Abenir Kali
- ...

If you're not sure where to go, you could also check out the monthly FMA-Picknick at UP.

Ps: You can get almost everywhere on public transport - if you count jeepneys. ;)

You could also spend a Sunday in Luneta park as there are a lot of eskrimadors and instructors there on a routine basis.. Just a suggestion.

I'm too big by far for the jeepneys, unless I have one side all to myself to give me room to duck down and see where I'm going! :)

Thanks for the pointers, I'll see if I can find contact details for any of them on the web.

Happy New Year!

Hi Bill,

Thanks. That's a great idea. Same place as Rizal Park, right? I've been past it on the way to the embassy already, so I'll give that a try next Sunday if I haven't found a class already by then.

Happy New Year!

Cool! Where are you based when not in Manila?

I'll be here in Manila until the end of February on this trip, then after 6 months away, I'll be back again for a full 6 months. Fancy meeting up on one of your trips?

Cheers,
Gary

I usually go to pampanga as I have several friends who are still in the area from the time I trained there in the early 70's. I was with 2 different instructors for more than 30 yrs until they both died in the past few years.. I still have some contacts in the area who teach and am now looking at setting up a business to bring in statesiders who want to train with people outside of Manila, because it is cheaper and with the international air carriers who are landing at the former clark airbase there, it is easier to make connections on international flights without the adventures of the Manila airport

Hi Bill,

That sounds like a great idea. I'm flying back to Florida at the end of February to tie up some loose ends for a few months, though I'll be back in Manila again when I'm done. I'm hoping to visit Rick Faye (my JKD teacher's kali instructor) in Minnesota the next time I return to the US. Whereabouts in the US are you from?

I'm also helping my fiance start a business in the Philippines, so we'll be spending around half our time here, and the balance between UK, US and NZ. Trying to keep up a good training regimen with all this traveling is proving harder than I'd imagined!!

Cheers,
Gary

I know how that is.. I had a career change about a year ago and still trying to get caught.. I worked as a cop prior to my leaving the island 2 yrs ago and went back into the hospital field which I had worked while in the military, so I thought I would try it on the civilian side.. Not worth the stress, so I moved back to the island and got back on the police department where I worked prior.. Just doing a little training while the schedule allows and relieve some of the adrenalin pump that sometimes comes with the job..

I am going to be in the Philippines for about 10 days next month trying to see how things are going to pan out with the local instructors and seeing about setting up a training camp for some of the stateside Dekiti Tirsia guys who have approached me to see about doing this on a recurring basis.. Oh well, we will see

Oh, you're from Chicago? That's where I'm based too. I work for a software company in Roselle that lets me telecommute from wherever I happen to be. But, it's been over a year since I set foot there already. I rode from Adams Street to LA on Route 66 in 2006, and then took my Harleys to Florida last Spring. One of the loose ends I need to tie up is selling those bikes... no sense in leaving them to rot in storage for 9 months of the year, and hardly worth shipping them to the Philippines -- I'm still too afraid of the traffic in Manila in any case! They're still on Chicago plates if you know anyone that is after a bargain... ;-)

Also, if you are ever in the UK and looking for a quality instructor, you couldn't do much better than Andre Martin (www.andre-martin.com), who recently introduced me to a metric butt-load of FMA disciplines he is proficient in that he kept quiet about while I was learning Wing Chun and JKD from him over the last several years.

Cheers,
Gary

Well if your in NZ at anytime, let me know I have some guys over there that will look after you, and if you ever get the chance to pop down to Torquay in Devon (UK) then drop me a line we can share a beer and I can let you know more about training in Cebu too.

Best regards

Also if you go to Luneta Park you will find the likes of GM Tony Diego Kali Ilustrisimo, GM Rodek Dagooc of Modern Arnis and the Rapido Realismo guys, go ealry in the morning and spend you day walking around both Luneta and Rizal (the other side of the road) you will be surprised just how many GM's are actually holding classes there, there are other MA classes held there too so a great place to train, meet and socialise on a Sunday.

Happy training

Pat

Hi Brian,

I'm not sure when I'm next in Chicago for more than a flying visit, but I'll certainly look you up as soon as I have any concrete plans. When I was last there, I spent a lot of effort trying to find an ITF Tae Kwon-Do club (that has been my main style until I hit the glass ceiling) without any luck...

It would be absolutely fantastic to keep up an FMA training regime as I travel from now on.

Cheers,
Gary

Hi Pat,

Well, as luck would have it my folks have retired to Brixham. I'll be there for a couple of weeks at the end of May/beginning of June. PM me your contact details, and I'll get in touch when we arrive. I'll have to insist on dark beer after surviving on only San Miguel all this time... ;-)

Regarding NZ, my fiance's brother lives in Christchurch on the south island, and our current plans put us there for a month or more around August. I haven't booked the flights yet though, so things might change.

I had planned to make a trip to Luneta park last weekend, but with the aftermath of moving house again I got up far too late. I'll certainly make the trip this coming Sunday though. How early is early enough? If I arrive by 10am will I miss everything?

Cheers,
Gary

Hi Pat,

Cool. I look forward to meeting you in person. What date is your Auckland seminar? Maybe I can book flights with a layover on the way in or out of Christchurch so that we can attend...

I was just looking around the sites in your sig, most impressive :) Is your Paignton shop a brick and mortar store? I'd be interested to take a look around if it is.

Cheers,
Gary

Hi mate,
Well I am schdualed to be teaching in Auckland on the 16th and 17th of August.

As for the store, it is my wife's internet based company, although we do have a wharehouse/storage area in Torquay just round the corner from our home. So everything is to hand.

Well hopefully we will meet up soon, and enjoy your trip to Luneta, 10 am is a good time, things should be just getting started around that time so you will see lots.

Also you will see my contact details on my web site, if you need to mail me at any time.

Best regards

Pat

Hi Pat,

Thanks for all the links and tips! I'll bear your NZ dates in mind when I come to book my flights, and give you a buzz about booking attendance if I can swing things that way.

I'm looking forward to Luneta park this weekend! :)

Incidentally, my fiance is getting her website and graphics design business off the ground, and is looking for a small number of candidates for a free website redesign to gain some exposure for herself. You can see some of her work at lunarianart.com, andre-martin.com and devilsride.com. If you're interested, please let us know.

Cheers,
Gary
